Devil May Cry is a hack-and-slash franchise developed by Capcom. It originally began its development as RE4 but Capcom found the game to be too action-based so Kamiya and Itsuno developed it into what we now know as DMC. This franchise was a pioneer in the hack-and-slash genre with its rewarding stylish system of chaining unique hits and attacks without taking damage. This often can be achieved in the game with the various amounts of weapons you are given while progressing through the story, typically earned after every boss fight. The charm of DMC is through its over the top, camp gameplay and story, with Dante’s nonchalant and laid back behavior towards demons. It also alludes and ties to Dante’s Divine Comedy.
He is the son of Sparda, the twin brother of Vergil, and the uncle of Nero. He works as a mercenary devil hunter, a mission he has pursued since the wake of his mother's death and corruption of his brother.
He loves to eat pizza and ice cream sundaes, because he is too cool to drink and smoke as Itsuno states. He is always seen sporting a red coat no matter what game he is in. Dante also tends to taunt and mouth off anyone he goes against, and shrugs off any circumstace he's in whether it's being impaled, stabbed, shot, eaten, flung, etc.
His name stems from Virgil, who represented reason and wisdom in Dante's Divine Comedy. He's often protective of Dante, who was dependent of him. This ties into DMC with how both Vergil and Dante need each other despite their differences. Virgil scolds Dante throughout his journey through hell for having compassion and sympathy for those in hell, which ties to how Vergil embraces his demonic side more.
He a stoic and precise fighter, one that is persistent in his pursuit of power, doing anything it takes to be just as strong as his father. Despite his cold and reserved nature, he does possess a cunning nature similar to his brother and has an absolute passion for poetry, specifically William Blake. This need to be powerful stems from him losing his family when Mundus ordered an attack on them when he was small.
Her name stems from "Madonna" which is another name for the virgin Mary (which is her real name: Mary Ann Arkham). In Dante's Divine Comedy, the virgin mary called on St. Lucia and Beatrice to aide Dante in hell.
